  • Take home painkillers except for products containing aspirin if you experience any pain
  • Avoid exercise and smoking for 24 hours
  • Follow a soft diet today and avoid using straws
  • You may experience some swelling or discomfort for a few days after the procedure
  • Contact the office if any pain persists or worsens, if swelling or bleeding persists

denture advice

Learning to wear new dentures requires time and patience

  • They may feel loose while the muscles of your cheek and tongue learn to keep them in
  • You may experience minor irritation or soreness. Soreness goes hand in hand with a new denture. Whenever soreness exists, see your dentist. It is likely that it will take a few adjustments before all sore spots are gone
  • Salivary flow may temporarily increase. Swallow hard to get rid of the saliva under your dentures
  • Cheek biting is very common in the first few weeks of wearing dentures. The dentist can adjust some of these problems
  • Eating will take a little practice. Start with soft foods cut into small pieces. Chew slowly using both sides of your mouth at the same time to prevent the denture from tipping
  • Pronouncing certain words may require practice. Read out loud and repeat troublesome words. If your dentures "click" while you're talking, speak more slowly
  • Remove your dentures before going to bed, this allows gum tissues to rest and promotes good oral health
  • Dentures need to be brushed daily, use a brush designed for cleaning dentures with hand soap or mild dishwashing liquid
  • When dentures are not worn, dentures should be placed in a denture cleanser soaking solution or in water.

Crown and bridge advice

  • After your first appointment for crown or bridge treatment, a temporary crown is usually placed on the tooth or teeth involved. You may experience some bleeding, discomfort, sensitivity to cold and pressure or mild pain after the procedure. Take over-the-counter pain relievers if needed
  • Avoid chewing on the crowned tooth for a few days, especially if it's sensitive. Stick to soft foods and liquids initially and avoid sticky or chewy foods
  • If your temporary crown comes off before your next appointment, place the temporary back on your tooth and call our office
  • Your new permanent crown will be shaped especially to your teeth in color and fit. The temporary crown is made to serve you temporarily, so its color and fit are not custom matched to your teeth
  • After your new permanent crown is in place you may need a few days to adjust to it. If you feel the bite is not correctly balanced, please call for an appointment and we can adjust it
  • Care for your new crown with proper brushing and flossing. It is especially important to keep the edge of the crown clean at the gum line
